Interactive
electoral vote maps are designed to help citizens understand
more about the electoral geography of a country, as well as other
related information online. Voters can easily locate their neighbourhood
polling stations, districts in a clickable election map.
Voters can simply enter their desired street address, or city and
then click on the map at that location to get elected officials
and to show information about their election districts. A Zoom In,
Zoom Out and Pan tool is also useful for voters to navigate the
electoral
vote map image and change the location shown on the map. Interactive
map can also be organized into layers that can be turned on or off
as needed for improved viewing, possible layers could include voter
precincts, districts (fire, school, political, etc.), property lines,
city boundaries, or even aerial photography. The interactive maps
help to educate the public geographical information about their
counties and state, and provide information about their officials
and candidates.

During the US presidential election in recent years, many media
websites, including TV and Newspaper websites, used interactive
maps to display and track the election results. The clickable electoral
vote map was colored red or blue to represent political parties
in the United States starting from the 2000 presidential election.
A blue state tends to vote for the Democratic Party while a red
state indicates the majority of voters vote for Repulican Party.
States in which the popular vote was within a small percentage are
gray and are denoted as battleground states. Roll
the cursor over the state will display the popular vote for
the last few elections. Visitors could even click on the remaining
states as the voting goes to make their predictions and see who
reaches the 270 electoral votes first. Web visitors can also
select other election from drop down list or by clicking the hyperlink,
to see the result of a particular election and its historical information.
Because of its dynamic nature, interactive map can also be used
for projection purposes. For example, as the electoral votes for
many states will change based on the outcome of the 2010 Census
- a projected map can be created based on Census Bureau estimates.
Voters, local and state officials can take advantage of the convenience and ease of use offered by interactive precinct maps. State, county or local election offices can make use of interactive maps as part of their election management infrastructure to better serve the public.
Interactive map software makes it easy to help people track the result of US presidential election, it can be updated on a regular basis easily to reflect changes in election results.
